Exposed Spine Byzantine Book

$80.00

Our hand bound blank book is based on medieval Byzantine codices. This book making tradition was used in mainland Byzantium while variations of it were used in surrounding geographical regions such as: Armenia, Georgia, Syria, Cyprus, Crete, Greece, the Slavic nations in the Balkans, and in more distant areas such as Russia.

Our book measures 5.5 x 7 inches, and consists of ½ inch thick wooden book covers supporting 98 blank pages. It is hand sewn in the byzantine style, using linen thread to attach the covers and folios with a link stitch. The book is sewn in two sections which are then connected together in the center, a technique unique to Byzantine bindings. The binding is left exposed so that the construction techniques remain visible as a design element. We construct our books with ½ thick beech wood or walnut covers, both of which have Byzantine precedents.

These books make excellent journals, sketch books, and gifts. We like to use ours as an authentic place to store information and take notes when we are at reenactment events.
